S. African prosecutors prepare final argument to prove Africa’s First Nobel Peace Laureate

(MENAFN) Prosecutors from South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have been granted a four-month window to present compelling arguments to Judge Nompumelelo Radebe, aiming to prove that Inkosi Albert Luthuli’s death in 1967 was not the result of a train accident, as originally concluded, but was instead the work of apartheid-era operatives.

On June 11, advocates Ncedile Dunywa, Annah Chuene, Siyabonga Ngcobo, and Xolani Msimango wrapped up their presentation of evidence, which began when the inquest opened at the Pietermaritzburg High Court on April 14.

Throughout the proceedings, a range of individuals gave testimony, including members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), officials from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), experts in scene simulation and reconstruction, forensic and medical specialists, Luthuli’s relatives, anti-apartheid campaigners, and his close friends.

Among those who testified was former justice minister Jeff Radebe.

The case has been adjourned from June 11 to October 13, with the prosecution team expected to deliver their final arguments by October 16.

In a related matter, the same court also postponed the inquest into the 1981 murder of political activist Griffiths Mxenge. His case, which was originally delayed on April 14, was moved to October 9. The postponement was to allow former apartheid police officers—potentially implicated in Mxenge’s death—to apply for state-funded legal representation, as they were serving government employees when he was killed in Umlazi.
