Algeria, Nigeria, Niger Advance Long-Stalled Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project
According to reports, construction activities have begun focusing on completing the Algerian segment of the pipeline, following a ceremony held in Algeria’s Adrar region attended by senior representatives from all three participating countries. The move came shortly after the project’s steering committee approved a final feasibility assessment and endorsed its recommendations, effectively clearing the way for further implementation.
The pipeline, first proposed more than 15 years ago, is designed to span approximately 4,000 kilometers, carrying between 20 and 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Nigeria through Niger and onward to Algeria. From there, the gas would be integrated into existing infrastructure for export to international markets.
The project has faced repeated delays over the years, largely due to security challenges in the Sahel region, along with financing difficulties and changing political dynamics among the participating states.
Officials from the three countries described the initiative as a reflection of shared political commitment. According to reports, Nigerian state minister for petroleum resources Ekperikpe Ekpo emphasized that the project is expected to contribute significantly to industrial development and job creation across the region.
Recent progress follows renewed cooperation between Algeria and Niger earlier this year, when both sides agreed to restart work on the long-delayed pipeline after high-level talks in Algiers. Algerian authorities indicated that construction would resume after Ramadan, with the national energy company Sonatrach overseeing implementation.
